Dragonfly Katana — 1080 High Carbon Steel, Hand Forged, Full Tang, Battle Ready

SKU: 659

$459.99 $549.99

This Dragonfly Katana channels the most powerful symbol in East Asian mythology — embodying wisdom, strength, and the relentless pursuit of mastery. Hand-forged from 1080 high carbon steel, oil quench hardened to 58–60 HRC. The oil quench produces a uniform hardness across the blade — edge and spine at consistent hardness throughout — which gives the blade its defining characteristic: flex up to 60 degrees under force, and return to true. There is no hamon. What you get instead is a blade built to perform under repeated stress without failure. The Dragonfly tsuba is hand-cut iron in a symmetrical openwork pattern. Individually inspected before leaving our California warehouse.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does 1080 have no hamon?
Hamon forms when clay tempering creates differential cooling — where the edge cools faster than the spine. Oil quench hardening cools the entire blade uniformly, so no differential zone forms and no hamon appears. This is a property of the process, not a defect. What you gain in exchange is a blade with consistent hardness throughout and the ability to flex without catastrophic failure.
What does “flex to 60 degrees” mean in practice?
Under significant lateral force — such as impact against a hard target or a blocking scenario — the blade can bend up to 60 degrees and spring back to straight without permanent deformation. This is a result of the oil quench process producing uniform hardness. A clay-tempered blade has a harder edge but a more brittle one; a 1080 oil-quenched blade trades the visible hamon for structural resilience under stress.
Is this blade sharp enough for serious cutting?
Yes. Hand sharpened on a Japanese whetstone, fully functional for tatami, bamboo, and demanding cutting practice. The 1080 edge at 58–60 HRC holds its sharpness longer than 1045 or 1060 and handles more aggressive cutting targets without rolling or chipping under normal use.
How do I maintain an oil-quenched blade?
Same protocol as any high carbon steel: wipe dry after use, apply a thin coat of choji or mineral oil, store in the saya away from humidity. The oil quench does not make the blade rust-resistant — carbon steel requires consistent oiling regardless of the hardening method.
Can I disassemble this katana?
Yes. The katana is fully disassemblable. The tang carries the swordsmith’s kanji signature — handle with care when taking the sword apart.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, the fitment of all fittings, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
