Iron Katana — 1045 Carbon Steel, Hand Forged, Full Tang, Battle Ready

SKU: 740

$206.99 $263.99

This Iron Katana is built around iron-based fittings and a heat-tempered blade — unadorned materials and functional construction that defined working samurai swords. The scabbard follows the shirasaya tradition — natural uncolored wood that presents the blade without competition, the pale grain of the saya giving way to nothing but the blade itself, with only a genuine buffalo horn ring at the koiguchi as the single fitted material detail. Hand-forged from 1045 high carbon steel, heat tempered and fully inspected before leaving our California warehouse. A capable, durable katana for collectors and practitioners who want proven steel without overcomplication.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is 1045 steel good enough for a functional sword?
1045 is a reliable entry-to-mid grade carbon steel — heat tempered to 52–54 HRC, it holds a serviceable edge for tatami and light bamboo cutting. It is the most forgiving steel in our line: easier to sharpen, more tolerant of lateral stress, and ideal for beginners. If you plan to cut seriously and regularly, we also carry 1060 and 1095 grades in most designs.
Is the blade sharp and ready for cutting practice?
Yes. Hand sharpened by whetstone before shipping — sharp enough for tatami mat and fresh bamboo cutting straight out of the box. No additional preparation needed.
What does the Iron design look like?
The tsuba features traditional tsuba. It is cast iron with a dark patina — the weight and texture of real iron, not a lightweight alloy substitute. The guard is a fixed part of the assembled sword and cannot be swapped.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
What makes the scabbard (saya) on this sword special?
The saya on this sword uses natural, uncolored wood in the tradition of the shirasaya (白鞘 — "white scabbard") — the storage and presentation scabbard used for blades that need no decoration to communicate their quality. Where painted and lacquered saya ask the viewer to engage with their color and finish, the natural wood saya steps back entirely: the grain is the only surface event, the pale tone of the uncolored wood is the only palette. The genuine buffalo horn ring at the koiguchi is the single departure from this material restraint — dense, naturally dark, and precisely fitted, it marks the point of entry for the blade with the kind of quiet authority that belongs to materials that earn attention without seeking it. This is a sword for the collector who understands that simplicity is not the absence of consideration, but its highest form.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
