Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.

The saya on this katana is painted with a full phoenix (fenghuang — 鳳凰) motif on a deep red lacquered wood base. The mythical phoenix is one of East Asia's most significant symbols — representing virtue, grace, renewal, and the harmonious balance of opposing forces. Here it is rendered across the full length of the scabbard in vivid multicolour detail: gold body, green and blue plumage, and fine brushwork that makes this saya a display piece in its own right. When sheathed, the blade disappears into a work of decorative art; when drawn, the contrast between that art and the functional steel is part of what makes this sword memorable.
