Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.

The saya on this katana features a gold bamboo painting on black lacquered wood. Bamboo (take — 竹) holds a central place in Japanese culture and martial philosophy: it bends dramatically under pressure but never breaks, returns to standing after the storm passes, and grows straight regardless of the ground beneath it. These qualities made it a natural symbol for samurai who understood that flexibility and recovery were as important as strength.
