Tomoe Crest Long Handle Katana — 1080 High Carbon Steel, Hand Forged, Full Tang, Battle Ready

SKU: 921

$355.99 $494.99

This Tomoe Crest Long Handle Katana carries the Tomoe, Japan's ancient swirling crest symbol that has adorned samurai armor and shrine banners for over a thousand years as a mark of divine protection. The scabbard uses black piano lacquer as its foundation and makes one precise material statement: genuine buffalo horn at the koiguchi — the dark, dense natural material fitted at the point where the blade enters the saya, a detail that distinguishes this scabbard from standard lacquered alternatives through material quality rather than decoration. Hand-forged from 1080 high carbon steel, oil quench hardened to 58–60 HRC. The oil quench produces uniform hardness across the blade, giving it the ability to flex up to 60 degrees and return to true — a characteristic suited to demanding cutting practice. Individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is 1045 steel good enough for a functional sword?
1045 is a reliable entry-to-mid grade carbon steel — heat tempered to 52–54 HRC, it holds a serviceable edge for tatami and light bamboo cutting. It is the most forgiving steel in our line: easier to sharpen, more tolerant of lateral stress, and ideal for beginners. If you plan to cut seriously and regularly, we also carry 1060 and 1095 grades in most designs.
Is the blade sharp and ready for cutting practice?
Yes. Hand sharpened by whetstone before shipping — sharp enough for tatami mat and fresh bamboo cutting straight out of the box. No additional preparation needed.
What does the Tomoe Crest Long Handle design look like?
The tsuba features tomoe crest tsuba. It is cast iron with a dark patina — the weight and texture of real iron, not a lightweight alloy substitute. The guard is a fixed part of the assembled sword and cannot be swapped.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
What makes the scabbard (saya) on this sword special?
The saya on this sword uses black piano lacquer as its base with genuine water buffalo horn at the koiguchi (mouth of the scabbard). The horn fitting is the key detail: where most production swords use plastic or composite koiguchi fittings, genuine buffalo horn is denser, more dimensionally stable, and provides a smoother draw surface for the blade. It also has a natural depth of color — not painted black but inherently dark — and a slight variation in tone and texture that no synthetic material replicates. The result is a saya that reads as standard piano lacquer until examined closely, at which point the horn reveals a level of material investment that is characteristic of swords built to be used as well as displayed.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
