Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.

The saya on this katana is painted with a willow and flower design on black lacquered wood. The weeping willow (yanagi — 柳) and seasonal blossoms appear together frequently in Japanese decorative arts as a pairing that captures natural beauty at its most transient: the willow's drooping branches and the blossoms' brief flowering both speak to impermanence (mono no aware — 物の哀れ), the Japanese aesthetic awareness of beauty inseparable from its fleeting nature. The design is rendered in two tones — warm gold for the willow branches and red-orange for the blossoms — against the black lacquer ground, creating a layered, seasonal composition across the full length of the saya.
