Crane Katana β€” 1045 Carbon Steel, Clay Tempered, Hand Forged, Full Tang, Battle Ready

SKU: 717

$390.99 $483.99

This Crane Katana celebrates the crane β€” Japan's symbol of longevity and good fortune for millennia, understood by samurai families who knew beauty and lethal precision are never separate. The scabbard uses deep forest green piano lacquer finished with a black and gold metallic bubble treatment β€” an unusual color choice that makes this saya immediately distinctive among katana, the green lacquer base giving the metallic surface particles a cooler, more naturalistic quality than the same technique applied to red or black. Hand-forged from 1045 high carbon steel, heat tempered and fully inspected before leaving our California warehouse. A capable, durable katana for collectors and practitioners who want proven steel without overcomplication.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is 1045 steel good enough for a functional sword?
1045 is a reliable entry-to-mid grade carbon steel β€” heat tempered to 52–54 HRC, it holds a serviceable edge for tatami and light bamboo cutting. It is the most forgiving steel in our line: easier to sharpen, more tolerant of lateral stress, and ideal for beginners. If you plan to cut seriously and regularly, we also carry 1060 and 1095 grades in most designs.
Is the blade sharp and ready for cutting practice?
Yes. Hand sharpened by whetstone before shipping β€” sharp enough for tatami mat and fresh bamboo cutting straight out of the box. No additional preparation needed.
What does the Crane design look like?
The tsuba features copper crane tsuba. It is cast iron with a dark patina β€” the weight and texture of real iron, not a lightweight alloy substitute. The guard is a fixed part of the assembled sword and cannot be swapped.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected β€” a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
What makes the scabbard (saya) on this katana special?
The saya on this katana combines deep forest green piano lacquer with a metallic particle bubble finish β€” fine black and gold-toned flecks suspended throughout the lacquer layer. Green is among the rarest base colors used in katana saya lacquerwork, most production swords using black or red. The choice here creates a naturalistic quality that complements the sword's design: green is the color of bamboo, pine, and the living landscape that forms the backdrop to so much Japanese art. The metallic particle finish adds textural complexity without disrupting the natural feeling of the base color.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
