Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.

The saya on this katana features a dragon motif executed in relief carving — a technique where the design is physically carved into the lacquered wood surface, leaving the dragon's body raised above the background rather than simply painted onto it. The result is a three-dimensional effect: the dragon appears to coil across the deep red saya, its scales and form finished in white and gold detail that catches light differently depending on the angle. This is a more labor-intensive technique than flat painting, and it produces a scabbard with a texture and depth that cannot be replicated in print.
