FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is 1045 steel good enough for a functional sword?
1045 is a reliable entry-to-mid grade carbon steel — heat tempered to 52–54 HRC, it holds a serviceable edge for tatami and light bamboo cutting. It is the most forgiving steel in our line: easier to sharpen, more tolerant of lateral stress, and ideal for beginners. If you plan to cut seriously and regularly, we also carry 1060 and 1095 grades in most designs.
Is the blade sharp and ready for cutting practice?
Yes. Hand sharpened by whetstone before shipping — sharp enough for tatami mat and fresh bamboo cutting straight out of the box. No additional preparation needed.
What does the Full Tang Japanese Samurai Sword design look like?
The tsuba features dragon tsuba. It is cast iron with a dark patina — the weight and texture of real iron, not a lightweight alloy substitute. The guard is a fixed part of the assembled sword and cannot be swapped.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
What makes the scabbard (saya) on this sword special?
The saya on this katana uses a black and red piano lacquer treatment — the two colors most deeply associated with the Japanese martial aesthetic. Red has been the color of action, urgency, and the visible force of blood and fire throughout Japanese military tradition. Black is the color of authority, formality, and the unreadable. Together they create the combination most associated with displays of martial intensity: the red field visible against or through black fittings. The vivid red piano lacquer main body, set against black fittings and tied with black sageo, produces a scabbard that reads at once as ceremonially serious and visually immediate — a sword that does not allow itself to be overlooked.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
