Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.

The saya on this sword uses natural, uncolored wood in the tradition of the shirasaya (白鞘 — "white scabbard") — the storage and presentation scabbard used for blades that need no decoration to communicate their quality. Where painted and lacquered saya ask the viewer to engage with their color and finish, the natural wood saya steps back entirely: the grain is the only surface event, the pale tone of the uncolored wood is the only palette. The genuine buffalo horn ring at the koiguchi is the single departure from this material restraint — dense, naturally dark, and precisely fitted, it marks the point of entry for the blade with the kind of quiet authority that belongs to materials that earn attention without seeking it.
