A rounded-profile shirasaya mount in natural, uncolored wood gives this hand-forged 1045 carbon steel Wakizashi the quietest presentation in our mid-length range β no guard, no wrap, just smooth pale wood grain and a genuine buffalo horn collar at the mouth. It is the rounded counterpart of our faceted Shirasaya Wakizashi (SKU 741): same steel, same natural wood, near-identical proportions; the difference is purely the shape of the wood in your hand.

How is this different from your other 1045 Shirasaya Wakizashi (SKU 741)?
Same 1045 carbon steel blade family, same natural uncolored wood and buffalo horn fittings, near-identical proportions. The only real difference is the shape of the wood: this version is rounded, with a smooth oval cross-section that fills the palm evenly, while the faceted Shirasaya Wakizashi is cut with flat planes and crisp edges. Choose by feel: rounded for a softer, traditional storage-mount hand, faceted for a more architectural look.
Why is there no tsuba (guard)?
Shirasaya is the plain wooden "resting" mount used in Japan to store and present a blade without decoration. It is built without a guard, wrap, or metal fittings by design β the blade and the wood grain are meant to be the only things you look at. This is intentional and traditional, not a missing part.
Is the wood painted or lacquered white?
No. The handle and scabbard are natural, uncolored pale wood β "white" in shirasaya (η½ι) refers to the bare, unfinished wood, not a coat of paint. Grain, tone, and small natural marks vary from piece to piece, so no two are identical.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected β a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
What makes the scabbard (saya) on this sword special?
The saya uses natural, uncolored wood in the tradition of the shirasaya (η½ι β "white scabbard") β the storage and presentation scabbard for blades that need no decoration to communicate their quality. Where painted and lacquered saya ask the viewer to engage with their color and finish, the natural wood saya steps back entirely: the grain is the only surface event, the pale tone of the uncolored wood the only palette. The genuine buffalo horn ring at the koiguchi is the single departure from this restraint β dense, naturally dark, and precisely fitted, it marks the blade's point of entry with quiet authority. The rounded profile of this version carries that restraint one step further: no edges, no facets, just a continuous smooth surface.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi peg before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
