FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What makes 1060 steel better than 1045?
1060 has higher carbon content (~0.60% vs 0.45%) resulting in greater edge hardness at 56–58 HRC and better edge retention. It is a significant step up for practitioners who cut regularly and want a blade that holds its edge longer between sharpenings. If you want the highest grade we carry, we also offer 1095 clay tempered versions.
Is the blade sharp and ready for cutting practice?
Yes. Hand sharpened by whetstone before shipping — sharp enough for tatami mat and fresh bamboo cutting straight out of the box. No additional preparation needed.
What does the tsuba design look like?
The tsuba features brass tiger gilt & silver. It is cast iron with a dark patina — the weight and texture of real iron, not a lightweight alloy substitute. The guard is a fixed part of the assembled sword and cannot be swapped.
How do I maintain the blade?
Wipe dry after handling or use. Apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil along the full blade length before storing. Carbon steel will develop surface rust if left wet or unprotected — a minute of care after each session keeps the blade in condition indefinitely.
How do I know the quality is genuine?
Every sword is individually inspected and adjusted before leaving our California warehouse. We check edge geometry, fitment of all components, and the security of the mekugi pegs before packing. If anything is not right, it does not ship.
